Braille displays: the price barrier, and the crack in it.
Braille displays: the price barrier, and the crack in it.
For decades a braille display cost $3,000–$4,000, and price remains the category’s top complaint. The story the guide should tell, per the community coverage: the Orbit Reader (about $500, 20 cells) broke that barrier — basic next to the flagships, and revolutionary at the price. The flagship end still exists — the HIMS QBraille XL ($3,195, 40 cells) was a Blind Bargains interviewee’s self-described new favorite braille display — and HumanWare’s Victor Reader line ($395–$499) covers the talking-book-player ground. Budget is not a lesser need here; it’s most people’s need, and it finally has an answer with a price tag in the hundreds.
